Presentation
Modern philosophy, especially since Hume, was characterized among other things by the attempt to banish from its scope all rational and rigorous consideration of human praxis and its adequate regulation. And it was not just an attempt - never realized - to develop a practical philosophy based on a model of the exact sciences, as in the case of Descartes, but rather a flat-out rejection of the very possibility of its existence.
The final result of this rejection, in which the Scottish skeptic was followed by the positivists, the physicalists, Nietzsche and his followers, Marxism, the emotivisms, as well as a large majority of analytical philosophers, was the exclusion of the ends, norms or values referring to human praxis in the realm of rationality and its consequent confinement within the framework of emotion, decision or the will to power.
The consequence of all this was the inability of reason - especially philosophical reason - to think scientifically about the principles of human praxis; Philosophy, if there was any place left for it, had to study only the methods of particular sciences or the genealogy of moral systems, but it had nothing to do when it came to determining the norms and values of human action.
Faced with this situation, ruinous for ethical-political thought, numerous authors attempted to criticize it and rehabilitate the rational way of thinking about human praxis. Among them we can count some precursors: Leo Strauss, Chaim Perelman, Max Scheler, Michel Villey, Eric Voegelin, Enrico Berti, Jacques Maritain, Romano Guardini and several more. This movement, first called "rehabilitation of practical philosophy" by Karl-Heinz Ilting in 1964, took definitive shape with the appearance, between 1972 and 1974, of two collective volumes with the title «Rehabilitierung der praktischen Philosophie».
