Institute of Social Housing

Since the beginning of activities in 1997, the Social Housing Institute ( IVS ) has been dedicated to providing educational support to the Social Housing Chair and other academic units of the FAUD, carrying out research work and organizing and participating in related meetings with housing and residential environments.

The knowledge related to social housing is of extraordinary breadth, including in addition to the knowledge of architecture and urbanism, those belonging to disciplines such as the humanities, sociology and urban and rural economics, law, engineering and others. that are amalgamated in a particular interdisciplinary context in permanent growth.

Added to this theoretical basis is the accumulation of information provided by the observation and analysis of the social and physical realities of the habitat of each time and place. Descriptive works of the housing work, analysis methods and intervention models for the production of houses, are areas of study of special interest to determine the state of the housing heritage of a certain society and its capacity to conserve it and make it grow.

The transfer of theoretical knowledge and experiences to the social actors of housing and urbanization, and to the environment in general, is another responsibility to be exercised from the university levels, even more so in conditions of social crisis such as those experienced today.

The activities of the IVS are aimed precisely at reviewing and updating the theoretical basis of social housing, updating educational content, researching the reality of housing, and communicating through knowledge and experiences that facilitate the production of homes and residential environments in conditions of physical and social sustainability.

Those of us who are part of the IVS welcome those teachers, researchers and students who feel attracted by the housing problem and the search for new ways of living in a world in rapid and difficult transformation.
