Equality and Equity Institute for Sustainable Development

Equality implies identical legal treatment between people who have the same conditions and situations, while equity includes fair treatment of people, giving each person what belongs to them based on the recognition of the specific conditions and characteristics, which brings with it justice, recognition of diversity and elimination of any discriminatory attitude or action.

Our mission is, through research, training and innovation, to make concrete contributions so that real equality and equity can be achieved from the academy for truly sustainable development, strengthening the foundations of our society where women and men enjoy the same rights and the same opportunities for participation in all spheres of life.

Territorial and environmental inequalities, gaps in access to sanitation and electricity, spatial segregation that manifests itself, for example, in long transportation times, gaps in technological infrastructure (access to the internet), increases in economic costs due to change climá.co and extreme weather events compromise the development possibilities of present and future generations.

Gaps in access to innovation and creativity give rise to a culture of privilege in which the many public goods and rights are not impersonal and a significant part of the population does not access them, which affects trust in democratic institutions. .

Women and girls represent half of the world's population and, consequently, half of its potential. However, gender inequalities persist and cause stagnation of social progress.

Achieving gender equality (SDG 5) and equity is essential to building peaceful, prosperous and inclusive societies in which inclusive social, economic and environmental sustainable development is promoted.

The general objective of the Institute is to create a specific area to promote the generation of new knowledge, promote scientific research and its transfer, as well as quality training on equality and equity as key axes in the creation of a new paradigm of egalitarian, equitable and inclusive sustainable development. We investigate to:

• training in equality as a prerequisite to achieve the objectives of sustainable growth, competitiveness, employment, and social cohesion;
• analyze the role of women in their communities and identify the difficulties they face in owning land, as well as advancing in the educational field;
• analyze the causes that make it difficult for women to reach positions of decision-making, governance, leadership and political and parliamentary representation;
• encourage people to support and practice equitable sharing of care work; • train and raise awareness on the issue of gender and gender violence against women in its various types (physical, psychological, sexual, economic, political and symbolic), and modalities (domestic, institutional, work, public and political);
• encourage undergraduate and graduate students, as well as professors at our University to hold meetings, debates and training on the subject;
• promote the interdisciplinarity of research on equality and equity to build a peaceful, prosperous and sustainable world;
• provide information that allows improving public policies and formulate proposals for regulatory changes that contain concrete measures and positive actions to remove obstacles that limit equal opportunities;
• encourage the internationalization of the Institute through the consolidation of international networks of scientific production in the corresponding active areas and…
• generate a space for reflection and visibility on the importance of the role of women to promote a new paradigm of sustainable development.

Research lines:

The Institute has various lines of research, without prejudice to those that may be created in the future, designed to understand the current world from a perspective of equality, equity and sustainability: one that addresses the constitutional aspects linked to equality and equity for a sustainable social development, one specific focused on the civil and commercial axis and two related to environmental issues involved in said development. All axes work guided by promoting equality and equity as engines for growth, development and sustainability.

• research report 'Women grape and wine producers in Mendoza, Argentina and Pennsylvania, USA: Facing the challenges of sustainability through networks' . This report was the result of collaborations between Argentina (province of Mendoza) and the US (state of Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania State University). It summarizes the findings of the study, which includes interviews and surveys with women grape and wine producers, and the staff of extension offices and wine consumers in metro Mendoza and metro Philadelphia.
