Organized by the Postgraduate Studies Department of the Faculty of Medical Sciences (FCM) and declared of Academic Interest, this event invites reflection on endometriosis through a film screening and panel discussion. It will take place on Tuesday, March 31st at 4:00 PM in the René Favaloro Auditorium.

Universidad de Mendoza, through its School of Medical Sciences (FCM), invites students, healthcare professionals and the general public to the presentation of the acclaimed documentary "Below the Belt"Given its relevance to the comprehensive training of future health professionals, the Dean of the FCM has resolved to authorize this proposal as an Extension activity and declare it of Academic Interest.

The appointment is next. Tuesday, March 31st at 4:00 PM in the René Favaloro Auditorium (Central Campus). For students designated by the chair, it is a mandatory activity, although The doors are open to the entire UM Community interested in this important public health topic.

A highly prevalent and underdiagnosed disease

As highlighted in the School's official resolution, endometriosis is a chronic, inflammatory, and highly prevalent disease that It affects approximately 1 in 10 women of reproductive age worldwide.This condition causes chronic pain, infertility, and a significant decline in the quality of life for those who suffer from it.

Directed by Shannon CohnThe documentary presents real-life testimonies from patients and highlights the structural difficulties within the healthcare system. It exposes the constant diagnostic delays, the clinical underestimation of symptoms, and the limitations in current medical training regarding this disease.

Interdisciplinary Panel: Integration of Knowledge and Critical Analysis

The event aims to go beyond the audiovisual screening. After viewing the film, an academic discussion will be held through a interdisciplinary question and answer panel.

This exchange of experiences and knowledge will include the participation of:

  • Authorities and teachers of the Department of Gynecology of the FCM.

  • representatives patient associationswho will provide their valuable first-person testimony.

  • The creators of the audiovisual proposal.

The aim of this space is to foster critical analysis, promoting debate on urgent issues such as social stigma, gender bias in medicine, insufficient professional training in reproductive health, and financial barriers to accessing specialized treatments. In this way, the goal is to transform the narrative surrounding endometriosis, treating it as a true public health and social justice crisis.

An educational resource with global impact

The impact of "Below the Belt" has transcended borders, becoming an internationally relevant educational resource for raising health awareness. The documentary has been screened in:

  • The leading medical schools in the United States and universities in Latin America.

  • Scientific institutions such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

  • High-level political spheres, including the United States Capitol, the Mexican Senate, the Spanish Ministry of Health, both chambers of the Uruguayan Congress, and the Honorable Chamber of Deputies of the Argentine Nation.

  • Spaces for specialized medical training, forming part of a continuing education course co-created with the Mayo Clinic and in the postgraduate program of the Argentine Society of Endometriosis (SAE).
